16 arrested after multiple incidents of contraband seized from within the Sumter County Jail
AMERICUS, Ga. – Multiple arrests have been made after a long and lengthy investigation in reference to multiple incidents of contraband seized from within the Sumter County Jail.
Sheriff Eric D. Bryant has a “zero-tolerance” policy on contraband in the jail. This policy is strictly enforced to ensure the safety of his employees and the detainees.
Sixteen individuals were charged stemming from this investigation. Eight were detainees, seven were outside associates of the detainees, and one was a Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Officer, Kendrick Daniel Wilkerson.
All 16 individuals were charged with OCGA 42-5-18 – Procuring for or being in possession of items prohibited by inmates.
Not only does Sheriff Eric D. Bryant take this crime seriously but so does the Georgia State Legislature. On May 1st this year Governor Brian P. Kemp signed a bill making this crime a Mandatory 10-year sentence.
Kendrick Wilkerson was also charged with OCGA 16-13-30 – Distribution of a controlled substance and OCGA 16-10-1 – Violation of Oath by a Public Officer, both serious felonies as well.

Sheriff Eric D. Bryant appreciates the relentless work of the Sumter County Investigative Division as well as the Jail Staff in this matter.
Contraband including drugs, alcohol, tobacco, cell phones, and weapons of any kind will not be tolerated. Anyone caught with or helping to procure contraband will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
