(SYLVESTER, GA)- Worth County Sheriff, Don Whitaker is the latest sheriff in Southwest Georgia to announce an increased law enforcement presence at local churches on Sundays.

“We don’t want to fool ourselves into thinking that it can’t happen here, but we want to be prepared. All the sheriff’s in the area, and I’m sure state-wide are trying to join in on this initiative..” Says the Worth County Sheriff

Sheriff Whitaker joins the likes of Tift County Sheriff, Gene Scarborough, and Dougherty County Sheriff, Kevin Sproul as the latest to take on the initiative.

Something Sheriff Whitaker says has become an unfortunate reality.

He says, “The sad thing about it is, Christians go to church or a house of worship to worship God. And now they have to be in fear because they are considered a soft target.”

In addition to providing security for churches, Sheriff Whitaker says there are other measures congregations should consider.

For some churches, it may come in the form of upgrading their buildings.

“If they can afford camera systems, they need a camera at every entrance and exit, except for the entrance to the sanctuary area. It needs to be locked before they begin.”
