VALDOSTA, Ga. — With COVID-19 numbers continuing to rise up across Southwest Georgia, another essential object is needed at hospitals all over, additional plasma for COVID patients, and LifeSouth Blood needs people to donate.

“There currently is not a stockpile in place for convalescent plasma donations. So we are processing them as they come in and are distributing straight back out to the hospitals to treat current patients,” says Valdosta Regional Manager, Kelly Barbour.

It’s not just anybody they’re asking to help by donating some blood either.

They’re asking anyone who has recovered from the Coronavirus to step forward as their plasma contains antibodies that can help those in their fight against the virus.

Barbour tells us, “The antibodies are believed to be at this point, a primary method of treatment, and helping these patients currently battling it to treat their immune systems.”

For those who have recovered from COVID-19, LifeSouth wants you to know that you’ll be safe donating some plasma to those struggling.

“We are providing masks for donors if they need them, we do have them, and we can supply them to you. We have increased our already stringent sanitation schedules, and we’re practicing social distancing at all of our locations,” says Barbour.

As the need for blood with COVID-19 antibodies starts to become as necessary as other supplies, medical centers are hoping that those who’ve recovered will lend a hand.
