(SYLVESTER, GA) – Much like other Southwest Georgia communities, the City of Sylvester is looking into Sunday alcohol sales and the public will vote on it this November.

Current Mayor Pro=Tem, Larry Johnson says it’s time Sylvester caught up to speed with other communities.

Johnson says, “We thought it would be a good way to enhance sylvester and bring in revenue as well as bringing other businesses here. Also, other communities have gotten with the times, albany, tifton, ashburn, and it seems to be working out fine for them.”

The plan would allow for both package sales in stores, and serving up drinks in restaurants.

Michael Hufstatler runs one local restaurant in Sylvester, and is preparing to open a second in the city, and he’s all for restaurants being able to serve alcohol on Sunday.

Mark tells us, “We’ve been doing it Monday through Saturday, so you know, if you don’t do it Monday through Sunday, you’re falling behind. I mean you end up falling behind everyone else, so it’s very important.”

Like so many Georgia counties over the last few years who’ve opted into selling alcohol on Sundays, Johnson knows that the big benefit is money staying in Sylvester.

“i feel that if you’ve got it going on on sunday, you could bring a lot of money in. A lot of our services are going out of town, so we want our businesses to stay right here, in Sylvester, and be able to have the services they have at any other time…,” says Johnson

If approved, Sylvester would follow Dougherty County in allowing Sunday alcohol sales.
