MARIETTA, Ga. – Georgia Senator Johnny Isakson announced he will step down from his senatorial position at the end of the year.

In a release Wednesday afternoon, the Republican senator cited his health as the reason he is resigning his Senate seat.

Isakson was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2013, and in July of 2019, he fell in his apartment in Washington D.C. suffering four broken ribs and a torn rotator cuff.

Isakson’s term was originally set to end in 2022.

He will officially vacate the seat Dec. 31, 2019.
