School-based Track and Field event sees many future athletes

ALBANY, GA – Over the weekend, kids from kindergarten to fifth grade got the opportunity to show their skills at Hugh Mills Stadium with an event called “School-based Track and Field”.

“I figured if I can make everybody else really look great, they will be great,” said Albany parks and rec director Steve Belk.

Some of the skills were 50 yards sprints, long jumps, and the stronger kids got the support role to help with Albany State’s track team, while some Albany teachers also volunteered to help out.

So in the summer, Mr. Belk proposed idea that he wanted to add to track and field, starting with the youth, because he felt like other states were better in track and field, especially California, Texas, even some parts of Georgia,” said ASU sprinter Jonathan Kelly. “He wanted to bring that vision to Albany.”

Next event will be February 22nd at Hugh Mills Stadium. The Stanley Floyd meet will be March 22nd at Hugh Mills.
