(ALBANY, GA) — Cars were lined up Thursday at the Salvation Army in Downtown Albany to receive boxes of food from the long-standing organization.

This comes days after a large meal supplier in the Dougherty County School System was forced to suspend food delivery earlier in the week.

Salvation Army Captain, Rebecca Sullivan says, “We realize that when someone else stops, we can pick up where they left off. We’re blessed to be able to give out food when an organization maybe runs short. And we just want to let the community know that hope is not canceled..”

For the next six weeks, the Salvation Army will be handing out boxes of food.

Thursday morning alone, they handed out 400 boxes, with each one meant to help keep a food-insecure family fed for a few days.

“The food is based on the availability and the need in the community. Each box has non-perishable food that can feed a family of four for up to three or four days,” says Captain Sullivan.

As concerns about food insecurity continue during the pandemic, Captain Sullivan says the Salvation Army will continue for the foreseeable future to distribute food.

She says, “It’s real important because we don’t know how long this pandemic and the shelter-in-place is going to last. We know that these meals are very important to a lot of the households…”

Sullivan tells us they’re working with the city to set up distribution at the Albany Civic Center moving forward.
