CORDELE, GA- Maurice King represents suspended Cordele City Commissioner Royce Reeves. Reeves was suspended from office by Governor Brian Kemp on January 21st of 2022 after Reeves was arrested and indicted from an incident that dates back to the summer of 2021. Reeves’ allegedly got into an altercation with a Georgia State Patrol trooper back in June of 2021.

Reeves’ attorney is calling out the prosecution for alleged legal shenanigans.

King says they have been trying to get their hands on the county’s master jury list for their case, but the state has

stopped them.

“I think every criminal defendant has a fundamental right to access the list and that is why we believe the law says that you can get it by just requesting it from the clerk,” said Maurice King, Reeves’ Attorney.

Reeves’ attorney points to a Georgia law which states, “On and after July 1st 2012, upon the request of a party or his or her attorney, the clerk shall make available for review by such persons the county master jury list.”

King says Crisp County’s District Attorney Brad Rigby is going beyond his legal authority.

“I think what some people are trying to do is undo an election,” said King.

Wednesday, Crisp County Superior Court Judge Denise Fachini granted Rigby’s request to stop the county’s master jury list from being revealed.

“The judge knows Mr. Rigby a lot better than she knows me and they use to work together, but I think the judge got it wrong,” said King.

Reeves’ attorney explains why he needs the jury list.

“It’s important. At some point we are going to have to look at these jurors and decide whether or not we want them to be on a jury with Mr. Reeves and whether or not they represent a fair cross section of the community,” said King.

We reached out to Rigby for comment, but the county’s top attorney told South Georgia Television that he couldn’t comment on pending legal litigation due to ethics.

Meanwhile, Reeves’ attorney says he’s going to continue his client’s legal battle.

“There is a possibility that we we will appeal it. We can try to appeal it now or we can wait until the case is over to try to appeal it. But all this does is waste taxpayer’s money.” said King.

We reached out to Judge Denise Fachini’s office for comment, but haven’t heard back yet.
