Roe V. Wade Overturned: Here’s what South Georgians have to say about the ruling

Friday, the Supreme Court made a decision to overturn the landmark 1973 Roe V. Wade ruling in a 5-4 decision.

ALBANY, Ga. – We knew decision day was coming for the Supreme Court in the making the decision of whether or not Roe V. Wade would be overturned but little did we know it would be this soon.

This ruling undercuts the 1972 precedent of Roe V. Wade legalizing abortion nationwide. Friday’s decision is being lauded by pro-life groups, while abortion rights supporters are digging in to fight. This making the midterm elections a new battleground on abortion.

Demonstrations from both sides of the aisle are happening across the country after the Supreme Courts overturning of Roe V. Wade precedent. The ruling precedes the infamous leak of a draft majority opinion. 13 states, including Georgia, have enacted so-called “trigger laws” which outlaw abortion, barring certain conditions.

Now with the Supreme Court’s decision handed down, rights will now be given back to the states in determining whether or not abortions will be allowed.

“It’s a sad day for the court and for the country.” said President Joe Biden.

Following the historic ruling President Biden bashed the Supreme Court decision, saying it takes America back 15 decades.

“Now with Roe gone, let’s be very clear, the health and life of women in this nation are now at risk.” said President Biden.

“Do I agree with abortion? No I do not.” said Mornice Harper.

But Mornice Harper adds that he doesn’t agree with taking away women’s rights.

“I believe every woman has the right to decide whether or not she wants to keep or terminate a pregnancy.” said Harper.

Meanwhile, Ella Hover sees the reproductive rights debate differently.

“And I believe in that if a woman get pregnant, you know, I feel that she should have that baby. And I feel that if a woman be raped, I feel that they should still have the baby, whether they want it or not.” said Hover.

Hover feels the adoption option is better than outright abortion, a belief backed up by her faith.

“I’m a person that really believe in the Bible and I believe in God real deeply. So I feel that, you know, once all life is there, it should not be taken.” Hover added.

Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett joined Justice Samuel Alito in the majority opinion. Chief Justice John Roberts added his concurring opinion that he agreed that the viability line established by Roe should be discarded and Mississippi’s Law should stand. The Mississippi Law banned abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy and the court reversed the decision of the 5th Circuit Court of appeals, which blocked the measure.

According to a map from Guttmacher Insitute there are just under 30 states that are likely to ban or severely restrict abortion with one of those states being Georgia.
