  • Total Positive Deaths from Phoebe Sumter – 115

Today, Phoebe is caring for 145 COVID-19 patients in its hospitals.  That is a decrease of more than 25% since the health system reached its omicron surge peak of 195 patients just over a week ago.

“Though our numbers ticked up slightly a couple of days this week, we hope and believe our downward trend will continue  Our January numbers, however, show just how severe this omicron surge has been.  Our health system admitted more COVID-19 patients (582) than any other month of the entire pandemic,” said Scott Steiner, Phoebe Putney Health System President & CEO.  “Typically, high points in deaths follow peaks in admissions by a couple of weeks.  Unfortunately, that is the case again this time as we have seen a sharp increase in deaths recently, with 14 in the past seven days.”

Phoebe continues to provide monoclonal antibody therapy to as many COVID-19 patients as possible, but those medications remain in short supply.  Hospitals do not have access to antiviral pills to treat COVID-19 patients, but supplies of those medications to a limited number of pharmacies are increasing.  “We believe these medications represent the next major step forward in treatment of this disease.  We are excited by the early success of these pills, and we are thankful that they are becoming more readily available,” said Dianna Grant, MD, Phoebe Putney Health System Chief Medical Officer.  “The pills are not appropriate for every patient, but we encourage physicians to prescribe them to patients when they are indicated to help minimize the number of people who will require hospitalization because of COVID-19.”

Phoebe stresses that none of the available treatments for COVID-19 should be seen as a replacement for vaccination.  “Vaccination remains your best protection against serious illness, and evidence continues to show that booster doses definitely give your immune system a needed boost.  We would like to see everyone who is eligible for a booster shot to get one,” Dr. Grant said.

Vaccine appointments at Phoebe locations can be made by calling 229-312-MYMD.  Appointments are not necessary for Phoebe Mobile Wellness Clinic events.  The schedule for those events is available at phoebehealth.com/mobile-health.
