Phase one in Radium Springs Garden’s renovation closer to reality

County Commission Meeting

ALBANY, Ga – Monday morning, the Dougherty County Commission gathered for their weekly, regular work session meeting. One of the meetings main areas of focus was the initial round of renovations at the former Radium Springs Casino.

Radium Springs Garden’s master plan is projected to cost around 1.46 million dollars.

Since this is such a major project, it’s being divided into phases.

Phase one of the project was up for discussion today.

Dougherty County Commissioner Victor Edwards says, “This was the first phase we was able to capture and I think we brought to the board this morning on what we call “the low hanging fruit.”

What county commissioners are calling “low hanging fruit” are the necessary infrastructure improvements needed to move forward with other renovations that will be in later phases.

Phase I projects would include expanding the beach area, waterfront plaza repairs, canoe landing renovations and electrical work at a parking lot area to provide power to vendors at outdoor festivals.

This $396,000 phase would be funded from a county 1 percent special-purpose local-option sales tax.

Edwards says, “This is funds we had left over from Splost 5.” He says that they had $400,000 in Splost funding and that, “we came under that $400,000.”

County Commissioner Edwards says the Radium Springs renovations are something everyone can look forward to.

“I think everybody is going to be excited. I can just see revisiting some of the past but bringing the past to the future and I think joining those two together, that’s the excitement of Radium Springs.”

The Dougherty County Commission could vote next week on the initial round of renovations and County Commissioner Edwards says he expects the board to approve the proposed phase one projects.
