Peaceful protests take place in Albany

ALBANY, Ga. – Throughout the day Wednesday, Albany residents could be found in the streets. Holding up signs, chanting and praying.
George Floyd’s death has garnered national attention and here in Albany, Georgia protesters are saying that seeing his death unfold from a screen prompted them to take action in the streets.
“It is an act that should cause all of us to action and action in a positive way to invoke change,” says Albany resident Anthony Branch.
Rioters and looters have hijacked national attention for invoking violence and destruction, but the protesters here say that things have gone peacefully because of the role the Albany Police Department has taken.
“These guys are not here in riot gear, they’re not here in a defensive posture we have police officers here passing out water, we have police officers checking on you to see if you’re ok we have police officers that are truly showing concern about the citizens.”
The protest’s organizers say that defeating racism is the root of their cause and that true change will come once people unify.
“Racism is not something that can be erased with a vote or a ballot, it is the hearts of man that we must change.”
Protest organizers say that they will continue to rally residents until they’ve felt that Albany is more united.
