Missy Tiber hosts youth basketball camp at Georgia Southwestern
AMERICUS, GA – We might be coming down to the end of the summer, but summer camps are still in full swing and today we came down to Canes country where Georgia Southwestern basketball is hosting day one of their annual youth camp.
Not only is it the first day of camp it’s also Georgia Southwestern’s new women’s head basketball coach Missy Tiber’s first day of camp as a hurricane.
“When they’re this young you’re just trying to introduce them to the game and allow them to have some fun, and hopefully they fall in love with the game of basketball,” Tiber said. “You want them to have fun while they’re doing it too.”
The camp is for rising kindergarten to eighth graders, and regardless of their basketball knowledge or skill level she wants the camp centered around the basic fundamentals.
“Just really introducing them to the basic skills of basketball, playing some fun games, getting them to understand a little bit about competitive spirit,” Tiber said. “We do some competitions. Not everyone wins and they don’t always like that but they have to learn what that’s like. My son’s here at camp too and I don’t let him win at stuff at home and I’m not going to let him win here, so it’s about teaching him those things. … So our goal is for the campers to benefit the most.”
Though day one has wrapped you can still register your rising kindergarten through 8th grader for the remaining three days. Camp is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and you can contact Georgia Southwestern athletics with any questions.
