Local Organizations Distribute 600 Boxes of Fresh Produce

AMERICUS, Ga. – Saturday morning, Healthy Sumter, in conjunction with Phoebe Sumter, Flint River Fresh, The Food Mill of Columbus, Sumter EMC, the Sisters in Service of Southwest Georgia, the local Shriners and the Sumter NAACP distributed 600 fresh produce boxes to the community at the Sumter County Fairgrounds.

More than 30 volunteers, including Commander Nelson Brown, Stephen Woodson, Odell Bacon Sr., Clifford Morgan, Jimmy Josey, as well as numerous organizations from throughout Southwest Georgia, were on hand to help their fellow citizens on a successful day of service.

Americus has several regular food distribution sites and emergency pantries for residents in need. Key locations include Manna House Ministries which holds weekly distributions on Wednesday mornings from 8 to 10 A.M., Harvest of Hope Food Pantry, which operates on Tuesdays of each month, and the Salvation Army which provides free groceries, hot meal programs, and assistance with public hunger programs as well.
