Local organization gathers volunteers to clean up yards with storm debris

ALBANY, Ga. – After severe weather ripped through Georgia in the early morning hours, a number of southwest counties reported varying levels of storm damage.
Luckily for residents in Albany and surrounding communities, the Albany Chain Gang was ready and determined to help those in need of their services.
Since 2017 the non-profit organization gathers volunteers to help those who’s property is overwhelmed by storm debris.
Teresa Knight, Albany Chain Gang dispatcher, says, “We’ll try to help anyone but our priority is the elderly, veterans, lower income people because they’re vulnerable. People with lower income are not going to have the means and resources to be able to take care of that debris. The veterans, they’ve served our country and you know they were willing to lay down their lives so for us, [we want] to be able to honor them back and help them. And with the elderly it’s the same as the lower income they might not have the means, possibly, not always but they can’t get out there and do it.”
Knight says the corona virus hasn’t halted the groups efforts and that the organization is following CDC-recommended precautions to protect volunteers and the people they serve during this time.
