Local church gives food to hundreds
(ALBANY, GA) – These cars were lined up across the Oglethorpe Bridge Thursday morning in Albany, as the Union Missionary Baptist Church was giving out boxes of food to help with food insecurity during the pandemic.
Pastor, John Severson tells us, “We felt that this was a necessary effort that we are putting forward to help the community in the midst of this crisis.”
Severson, alongside members of the church were handing out hundreds of boxes of food to those in the South Albany community.
“They’re hungry, and they need food, that’s what it says to me. And the church, the religious community should come together and do what we can to support and help our people,” says Pastor Severson.
Just like the pastor, members of the Union Missionary Baptist Church are making sure that people can keep their faith as they continue to get help with food.
We caught up with a couple of church members during the rush about lending a much needed hand in these trying times.
Church member, Betty Byrd says, “This is our mission, to help people, and we also put little pamphlets in our boxes, encouraging people to read god’s word also. As we feed them physically, we also want to feed them spiritually.”
“I think that it would help aid and assist any person who is struggling for whatever the situation might be. When they;re given something to help them out, it helps their spirit,” says fellow church member, David Parks.
As another group is able to do their part in fighting food insecurity during the pandemic, the church is hoping they’ll be able to do something like this again soon.
