Lee County to use grant to hire an intern for GIS database development

Lee County's GIS system

LEE COUNTY, Ga. – Lee County was selected for the Georgia County Internship Program (GCIP) grant again today.

This makes three years in a row that the county’s received the nearly $2000 grant.

The grant will allow Lee County to hire a paid intern to help develop their county-wide geographic information system (GIS) database.

Rozanne Braswell, the Planning, Zoning and Engineering Director for Lee County, says the internship participators can go on to accomplish great things for the county and develop real world experience.

She says “We look forward to somebody bringing knowledge in the GIS field, being able to do maps and to do field work and bring data to update our maps. Our maps are only as good as the data we have.”

The internship pays $12 an hour and students have until April 17th to apply through the Lee County website.

Intern turned GIS Tech, Corrie Wheeler

Corrie Wheeler, past intern and now current GIS Technician with the Planning, Zoning and Engineering Department in Lee County says the work she did as an intern improved the lives of Lee County residents.

She says, “As an intern I got to work on the mile markers for the rivers here, I feel like everything I do gets used basically everyday and that’s awesome.”
