Lee County crews working on dirt roads

(LEESBURG, GA)- After a stretch where nearly 10 inches of rain has been through on our area, Lee County workers have been working around-the clock trying to keep all dirt roads up to snuff.
Co-County Manager, Mike Sistrunk tells us, ”We have got our crews out today, working, and doing everything we can as far as roads we can attend to. A lot of these sandy roads can work on. As you can see right here, we’re trying to tackle as many as we can, and keep the crews as long as we can today.”
With more than 200 miles of dirt roads across Lee County, and more rain on the way, there’s a sense to have the roads, and the areas around them ready for even more wet weather.
“The ground has become just so saturated that it’s leaking onto the roads. So we’re trying to clip off the grass, and keep the water from setting on the roads. With the cold weather coming in, we don’t want any kind of ice on the roads as well,” says Sistrunk.
In addition to regular dirt roads, crews have been finding trouble in dealing with clay roads, which can provide and even greater challenge for those who live along them.
Sistrunk says, ”On our clay roads, I have a sand truck trying to sand it. What we’re trying to do is trying to put sand on it to keep it from getting slick. But as far as doing work on it, we’re not really wanting to tackle it today. I don’t want to break the clay up and make it worse.”
As crews continue to work against the clock before the next round of storms, they’re asking that county residents be a little patient as they make sure the roads are stable.
