LCSS revises Walk Zone decision
(LEESBURG, GA) – After a couple of weeks back in class, the Lee County School System has made the decision to drop the walk zone ruling for students in 6th grade and up.
Superintendent, Dr Jason Miller says this came due to the number of students taking school transportation.
He says, “So far, we’ve had a lower than expected number of students riding the bus. So this helps us with social distancing. We can’t normally guarantee social distancing on the buses, which is why we required students to wear a mask.”
While there have been lower numbers of students on buses, dr miller says there’s also another reason why they’ve decided against the walk zone decision, and it involves the number of bus drivers in lee county.
“We’re facing a shortage of personnel, in particular bus drivers. That’s actually a national, and statewide problem, not just a lee county issue. So we’re hoping to get more people driving,” says Dr. Miller.
Despite the lift on the walk zone order, Dr Miller says that some students may choose to continue walking to school, and he has a wants to say one thing to drivers in lee county.
Dr. Miller tells us, “We just want to remind our drivers to be careful, and be cautious as they’re coming through town on school mornings or afternoons, and to be mindful of young people walking out.”
