Jason Carpenter lands as Lady Jets new head basketball coach

Carpenter becomes the third head coach in program history

AMERICUS, GA – Last week, South Georgia Technical College named Jason Carpenter as its new women’s head basketball coach, the third in program history.

Carpenter comes from Georgia Highlands where he was the assistant coach from 2018-19, to 2021-22. He helped the Lady Chargers to a a 32-3 record in his final year where they lost to Tyler Junior College in the NJCAA Championship.

Despite the loss, however, Carpenter said he was still grateful to learn from the legends.

He will have some big shoes to fill as he will be stepping in for former head coach James Frey, who is now the head women’s basketball coach at New Mexico State. Before his departure, Frey led the Lady Jets to an Elite Eight appearance in the NJCAA tournament and a 33-2 record, the best in program history.

And despite the entire starting five from that team having graduated and moved on, Carpenter said he does not mind a fresh start.

He was also named the athletic director for the school and said he expects to see it to continue to succeed, but fans hope to see his Lady Jets succeed once again as the team will begin the season in October.
