Irwin County hosts annual cheer camp, wraps baseball youth camp

OCILLA, GA – It was a hot one on Wednesday morning in south Georgia, but at least the campers got to cool off on the final day of the Irwin County youth baseball camp today.

The three-day camp saw kids from ages 5-14 working with coaches on how to field ground balls, hit and pitch during the first two days, and on the third day, they got to play King and Queen of the Diamond, wiffle ball, and were timed on their pitching and hitting speed.

Overall, the camp saw over 50 kids – new and returning – having a blast.

“The big thing we wanted to do this week is have fun and introduce the kids to Irwin County baseball,” said Indians head coach Drew Tankersley. “I’m proud of our players who are out here working with the kids and investing their time.”

That was not all that was going down in Ocilla, however.

Inside Irwin County High School, the Indians held their annual cheer camp.

“It’s important that girls start off young … to help them grow and understand and gain those necessary skills to become a high school cheerleader,” said Indians cheer coach Anna Howell.

The cheer camp saw over 75 young girls from Pre-K to 2nd grade working with Irwin County coaches and cheerleaders on how to better develop their skills, so when they are older, they will be ready to try out for high school.

“Our kids don’t have a lot to do [during the summer], so I feel like activities like this help give them something to do and put their time into,” said Indians cheer coach Hannah Leverett.
