For only the second time ever, the American Red Cross has declared a national blood supply crisis. The designation means that hospitals and blood banks are only receiving a limited amount of type O blood following a downturn in donations over the summer. The low blood supply means that hospitals may have to start postponing elective surgeries until the situation is fixed. “When we don’t have enough of an adequate blood supply, providers are having to make difficult decisions and decide who can receive blood now versus who might have to wait,” says Dr. Courtney Lawrence a Divisional Chief Medical Officer with the American Red Cross.
