SECOND PHASE OF META TRIAL UNDERWAY IN NEW MEXICO

A New Mexico jury found in March that Meta violated state law by failing to warn users about the dangers of its social media platforms and didn’t do enough to protect children from sexual predators. Now, a bench trial is underway to determine if Meta platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp pose a public nuisance. If successful, the judge could force the tech giant to spend billions of dollars to institute changes to its products. A spokesperson for Meta has said that it intends to appeal the initial verdict and that the company “spent years building technology to combat” child exploitation.
