(DNT) STEINWAY PIANOS STILL MADE IN NYC AMID MANUFACTURING WOES

Manufacturing isn’t easy these days. Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows U.S. manufacturing lost 12,000 jobs in August. That’s the fourth consecutive month of manufacturing job losses, for a total of 42,000 jobs slashed since April. But at a time when manufacturing in the United States is in retreat, Steinway & Sons is a rare bright spot. For over 150 years, Steinway & Sons has been handmaking some of the best pianos in the world in one of the hardest places for a manufacturer to survive – New York City. “It’s not easy to continue to manufacture in New York. I think we are the largest manufacturer remaining in New York City,” Steinway & Sons CEO Ben Steiner says. “We’re very proud of that.” Correspondent Leigh Waldman got a rare look into the piano maker’s Astoria, Queens factory where building a piano takes 11 months from start to finish, with workers on average building only about 4 to 5 pianos a day. Waldman has all the details in Friday’s 3pmET PKG with FREE custom live shots from 3p-7pET in New York City, as well as a more in-depth piece that’s perfect for your weekend coverage!
