Georgia Southwestern introduces Emma Johansen as new head softball coach

AMERICUS, GA – A new hurricane has made landfall in Americus and her name is Emma Johansen.

Georgia Southwestern would introduce its new head softball coach Monday morning after former coach Nicki Levering stepped down after eight seasons, and after a few weeks of looking for the right candidate to lead the Lady Canes back to the division two tournament, Johansen got the call.

“As we search for the new leader of our softball program, we wanted to find somebody that emphasized and believe the three C’s that we have,” Director of Athletics, Mike Leeder, said. “Someone that could recruit elite players in the classroom, in the community and on the competitive field of success.”

Johansson is no stranger to Division II either. She spent the past two seasons at Cameron University in Oklahoma, leading her team to 61 wins. Before that, she was the assistant coach at the University of West Florida, where she helped coach the Lady Argonauts to a couple of Division II championship appearances. Now she looks to take all that knowledge from her previous stops and apply it to the Lady Canes.

“You take every bit that you’ve learned from them and you kind of turn it to make it your own,” Johansen said. “I’ve had the opportunity to compete at the World Series and win, compete at the World Series and lose, and go to several super regionals. You’re just a product of everything you’ve had in those situations and you’re constantly growing and learning. What I know now compared to two years ago or even five years ago, it’s just exponential. And I know that’s going to continue to happen.”
