East Albany Clinic one of the few working on county’s feral cat problem
(ALBANY, GA) – It may not look it from the outside, but the East Albany Animal Clinic is doing their part to control Dougherty County’s feral cat population.
To Dr Fred Freeland, it’s a bigger problem than it may seem.
“We may have 10,000 or more feral cats in Albany and Dougherty County. We have individuals who have 30-40 cats, and that’s not that rare,” says Dr. Freeland.
At this time the clinic is only capable of spaying several hundred stray and feral cats in a given year.
For those who are trying to help feral cats that come to their doorstep, they can’t keep waiting on them if they’re feeding the ferals.
Dr. Freeland, “People who start feeding cats, they need to get it done right away. Within the first month or two that they start feeding the cat, they need to get it to a veterinarian. Because, before you know it, you’ll have a litter, and then you have reproducing animals.”
In addition to controlling the feral cat population, the East Albany Clinic, they’re also offering lower cost care for albany pets.
Something that may be going unnoticed during the pandemic.
“We probably have a lot more unwanted litters than we did eight months ago, because a lot of spay and neuter clinics in communities and veterinarians have had to postpone to protect their staff and post pone those procedures,” says Freeland.
