DPH reports 4 cases of Monkeypox across Southwest Georgia
Monkeypox was first discovered in the late 50s and is spread through intimate, skin-to-skin contact.
ALBANY, Ga. – Monkeypox is now beginning to spread rapidly nationwide putting the total number of cases at 5,811, according to the CDC. Dr. Charles Ruis provided an update to county commissioners Monday morning confirming that there are 4 cases across Southwest Georgia.
Health officials say that monkeypox has been around for quite sometime, with the first human case being recorded back in the 70s; but has been limited to several central and western African countries.
“So we know a good bit about it, we just normally don’t see it outside of Africa.” said Dr. Derek Heard, Medical Director of Primary Care for Phoebe Physician Group.
