Dougherty EMS seeing increase in heat-related calls

ALBANY, Ga. — Just around halfway through the month of July, Dougherty County EMTs are seeing an uptick of heat related calls.
Director, Sam Allen says that in the last two weeks, they’ve been averaging nearly three calls a day, and the people it’s affecting are where most would least suspect it.
“Most of them are at home. They’re working in their yards, in the direct sunlight, and they overheat that way. I’m not aware of any commercial-related calls that we’ve had,” says Allen.
It’s not just citizens who EMTs have been responding to calls about heat related illnesses.
Allen says those on calls have had to keep an eye on each other to prevent the same thing, but the other trend ems is seeing with these calls is when they’re coming in.
He suggests, “Work out in the early morning or work out in the late afternoon, when it starts to cool down. If it’s in the middle of the day, between 11-4, stay out of the sunlight when possible, and try to take breaks as often as you can.”
As the intense heat continues to bear down on our area, Allen is encouraging that if you are starting to feel the heat, that you shouldn’t hesitate to call 911.
He tells us, “If you get overheated, and you’re feeling really lightheaded and dizzy, immediately call 911 and we’ll have an ambulance come out and take a look at you.”
Allen also recommends that if you are going to work outside, that you either have someone with you or keep your phone charged.
