ALBANY, Ga. – The Dougherty County School System may consider pushing back the start date for school. Right now, the school system intends on having students back August 3 but in a press release, superintendent Kenneth Dyer says he wants to wait until as late as August 31st for some schools.

Dyer says he wants to bring up the change of date to the Board of Education in order to allow the trend line for COVID-19 cases in the county to reverse.

Current trends show that coronavirus cases, COVID-19 testing and hospitalizations are rising in the area.

In the press release Dyer said: “Taking a multitude of factors into consideration, including concerns as a parent, employer and a former small business owner, I am making a recommendation to the Dougherty County Board of Education that we amend the district calendar… to allow the curve to flatten.”

This option will be considered by the Dougherty County Board of Education at its July 29th meeting. To see Dyer’s entire announcement click here.
