Deriso represents himself in recall petition hearing
Cordele's lawsuit stricken Commission chair tries quashing citizens' attempt for his ouster from office

CORDELE, GA – Embattled Cordele City Commission Chairman Joshua Deriso got his day in court Thursday, as he tries to stop a recall petition from concerned citizens who want him removed from office.
Recall organizer Trae Sims is represented by Cordele attorney David Forehand, as Deriso chose to represent himself for the proceedings.
During opening arguments, Deriso admitted before presiding Judge Kathy Palmer that he has no legal background or training, and in many instances, it showed during Thursday’s hearing.
Former Cordele Police Chief Mike Hathaway, former Cordele Commission Chairman John Wiggins and petition organizer Trae Sims all testified, with Deriso attempting to cross examine the witnesses.
Deriso’s critics maintain he has created a hostile environment since his election to office, and fired the former city manager due to his race.
The citizens’ recall petition remains on hold until the Judge renders a verdict.
