Deerfield-Windsor Lower School hosts ‘Patriot’s Day’

(ALBANY, Ga)- 5th grade students at the Deerfield-Windsor Lower School got the chance Thursday afternoon to wrap up a portion of their curriculum with the help of a local historical society.

“I’m just excited that Deerfield-Windsor gets to provide the students with this instead of just teaching them the basics. We are teaching them in depth the founding of our country, and it’s called ‘Why America is Free'” says 5th grade teacher, Haley McClendon.

Through the help of the Albany Chapter of the Colonial Dames, the students were out-fitted in period-appropriate attire, and got to experience what they were learning about for the previous 6 weeks.

Nancy Ventulett of the Colonial Dames tells us, “We wanted the children to understand the difference of ‘today vs yesterday’ and how it’s influenced their lives today.”

We spoke with a few of the participating students about “Patriot’s Day”

“If I had to scale it on 1-10, it would be like 10 billion.Like I’ve had so much fun preparing for this day. And doing this day is really exciting,” says 5th grader, Blaine Ellion.

Student, G.G. Aderhald says, “I have loved it. I think it’s going to be one of my favorite days here.”

“It’s amazing because we get to learn about the Declaration of Independence, colonial times, the Revolutionary War. It’s amazing to spend this opportunity with everyone else.”

The school has partnered with the Colonial Dames Albany chapter for six years.
