Crisp County High School wraps inaugural youth volleyball camp
CORDELE, GA – For the first time ever, Crisp County High School held a youth volleyball camp where the goal was to help girls from third to fifth grade grow and develop their skills to hopefully one day become future Lady Cougars.
“For the past couple of days, we’ve just been working on the different skills because what we’re trying to do is just grow the sport in the community,” Lady Cougars head coach Danielle Cruz said. “It starts with our little kids with instilling the love for volleyball and the skills and everything in them when they’re younger. So when they get up to high school, they’re able to bring something to the table for us.
The Lady Cougars volleyball team are pretty young themselves. Their first season ever was in 2021, so this camp was not only helping kids become better players but also a chance for Cruz to do some early recruiting.
“We’re getting a middle school team this year,” Cruz said. “We were trying to catch the kids before they got into middle school to teach them the skills, so when they got a tryout, they kind of already had a basic knowledge of the sport.”
The better news is now that there’s a professional volleyball federation that just started their inaugural season this year, Cruz believes the sport will grow even more now that there’s a chance for the kids to play professionally.
“Alani [Mosley} is going to go play at Fort Valley, and so it’s really encouraging for her to see that growing here in the state,” Cruz said. “So there’s something more if she continues or if anybody else wants to try to pursue it as far as they can go.”
