CRISP COUNTY, Ga. – Several schools throughout the state have had to completely shut down their summer workouts and athletic activities due to some athletes testing positive for COVID-19.

In Crisp County, an athlete in the Crisp County High School’s football program tested positive for the virus after showing some minor symptoms of coronavirus.

Because of the diagnosis, Athletic Director Jimmy Hughes says they’ve decided to shut down football related summer workouts and activities indefinitely.

“We’re not pushing the date to come back until we’re sure that everyone’s ready to come back and come back safely.”

Hughes says the high school was taking all recommended precautions prior to learning of the positive COVID-19 test result and will continue to do so.

“We’re doing everything that the GHSA has asked us to do and the Department of Public Health, plus more. We can just do the best we can to try to keep them safe and keep our staff safe.”

Hughes says others within the program may also have been exposed to the student prior to knowing of the positive diagnosis and if at any time an athlete begins to have any symptoms which are COVID-19 related, they should contact their physician immediately to discuss the correct measures they should take.

He adds that the student who did test positive for COVID-19 is doing well and is currently not experiencing symptoms.
