Colquitt Regional urges screenings during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

MOULTRIE, Ga. – Colquitt Regional Health System is encouraging residents to prioritize screenings and prevention during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

Health officials say colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer when detected early, often through routine screenings like colonoscopies. These screenings can identify and remove precancerous polyps before they develop into cancer.

“Early detection can truly save lives,” said President and CEO Jim Matney, who emphasized the importance of talking with a healthcare provider about recommended screenings.

Doctors recommend most adults begin regular screenings at age 45, though those with certain risk factors may need to start earlier.

Sterling Physician Group gastroenterologist Dr. Don Roberts says many patients delay screenings, even though colorectal cancer often develops without symptoms in its early stages.

“Colorectal cancer often develops without noticeable symptoms in its early stages,” said Roberts. “That’s why routine screening is so important. A colonoscopy allows us to detect and remove precancerous polyps before they become cancer, significantly reducing a patient’s risk.”

In addition to screenings, health experts encourage maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, limiting alcohol, and avoiding tobacco use.

Officials say expanding access to preventive care remains a priority, helping ensure patients across Colquitt County and surrounding areas can receive care close to home.

Anyone experiencing symptoms such as abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, or blood in the stool is urged to contact a healthcare provider.
