Colquitt’s new Flag Football program kicks off summer practice.

The Lady Packers are gearing up for their first season as an official program.

MOULTRIE, GA- It’s going to be an excited season for Packer football and not just for the boys. This is the first year ever Colquitt County will have an all-girls flag football team.

From first glance, the Lady Packers are showing major promise for just their second practice. Many are learning, but all are natural athletes.

“We’ve got a lot of team speed… you can replace them and there’s not going to be an issue. We have great throwers of the ball along with excellent defensive skills. and we have to teach them not to tackle because… they want to tackle!” Said Head Coach, Kirk Woodall.

“We have a lot of athletes on the team, but we just need to keep learning and stay focused,” said flag football athlete, Jamya Moore.

The Atlanta Falcons donated 5 thousand dollars for Packer Athletics to start this program, but Athletic Director Cleve Edwards says there’s still a lot to be done.

“Any chance we get to add a female sport, it’s a positive thing. Now we get to figure out everything that goes into fielding a flag football game. That includes a different size football field, where we’re going to play and how we’re going to practice. So, it’s new, we’re exciting and we will get it figured out,” said Edwards.

Woodall has coached football for years and says although the gender of his athletes has changed, he says his coaching tactics will not.

“I’m going to coach the way I coach. I probably am not going to be as hard around the edges as I have been with boys, but that’s because the standard is a state championship. We went and looked at the trophy case and I said, ‘that’s the silver cup I’m talking about, that’s what we’re all playing for, and you have just as good of an opportunity as anyone else this year to get one,” Woodall said.

Edwards and Woodall’s goal is to equip the girls with everything they need to win a state title. But community support is just as important.

“The more people we can have come watch games, the more we can do for our kids,” Edwards said.

“We would love, love, love for our first game being at the Mack to have the home side, home section middle section be filled up with fans. If we could have that, it would be breathtaking,” Woodall explained.

Coach Woodall and Coach Edwards want these girls to receive the same amount of love and support as the boys’ program. The first opportunity for Packer Nation to support is next weekend, June 17th in Title Town where the Lady Packers are traveling to play in their first football tournament at Lowndes High School.
