ALBANY, Ga. – The city celebrated the completion of an almost five year project today. The Southwest Georgia airport now has a passenger bridge.

Passengers deplaning at the Southwest Georgia Regional Airport will no longer have step out of a plane and into unpleasant weather.

The addition of this new passenger bridge will keep commuters out of the elements as they enter or leave the terminal.

During the ceremony, Mayor Bo Dorough said the new bridge was necessary.

He said, “It was time for us to move into the 21st century, this is a facility that we can all be proud of. This will further transition our airport into one of the best regional airports.”

And the bridge not only looks nice, Chairman of Aviation Commission Dr. Frank Middleton says the $1.6 million bridge is also an important installation to provide visitors with comfort and safety.

“Safety is one of our most important considerations and this project adds to the safety that we have at this airport and it certainly adds to the comfort of our passengers and I think it will allow the airport to grow considerably in the future.

Now that the paint is dry and the ribbon is cut, the airport is looking forward to their next project as they continue to develop.

Middleton says, “We’re going to add a new general aviation terminal on the other end of the airport where the other traffic, other than air transportation, comes in.”

City officials expect 100,000 people to pass through the facility this year alone. And now, they can do so in the comfort of the passenger bridge.
