Baker Co officials assess flooding

(NEWTON, GA) — While the rain is out of our area, Baker County officials in Newton are still dealing with heavily flooded roads downtown.
On Sunday, the water nearly up to the first floor of the old Newton Courthouse.
Baker County Sheriff Dana Meade says, ”It seems like it’s occurring more frequently, the flooding. The people of Baker County, and in Newton, this is nothing for them.”
The flooding in Downtown Newton is the worst the county has seen since 2016, and Meade says they’ve had to help people evacuate their homes which were at risk.
He says, “We really don’t have a whole lot of houses that flood easily. So we’ve only had I think four people who’ve had to vacate their house…”
Sheriff Meade says that they’re still waiting for flood waters to recede to assess the damage to the roads.
“You know, we’re still asking people that, if there’s water over the roadway, avoid driving through it. And there’s still areas that we haven’t been able to get to to check on the damage,” he says.
Sheriff Meade says the flooding was continuing to recede Tuesday Afternoon.
