Albany Technical College helping those displaced by pandemic

ALBANY, Ga. — With re-opening well underway, many of those who were laid off from the pandemic have a chance to get back into the workforce.

As Albany Technical College and the Georgia Department of Labor are lending a hand to those who’ve been displaced.

Albany Technical College President, Dr. Anthony Parker tells us, “They’re gonna be displaced either temporarily, and some may be displaced for a longer period of time. And we want to offer them the opportunity to be re-educated and re-paying.”

The technical college will is helping those who’ve been left jobless through opening their doors to online courses as soon as possible.

More than that, they’re making it so that those taking classes aren’t going to feel financial strain.

“We have suspended the application fee for at least two terms. We are not requiring students to test for admissions unless they are going into a health technology program,” says Dr. Parker.

With many now looking to get back to work, dr parker says that while other businesses have had to shut down, many who are manufacturing essential goods need extra hands on deck for now.

Especially since manufacturing is only a small part of the jobs needed.

Dr. Parker says, “It’s not enough to just manufacture them. We’ve got to get them from the factory to a distribution center. We need truck drivers, diesel technicians, automotive technicians, and manufacturing support.”

As Albany Tech and the Department of Labor are trying to help get people back to work, there’s plenty of long and short-term opportunities available.
