ALBANY, Ga. —  Albany Technical College is moving forward with their nursing program.

The college announced Tuesday, that they have been granted candidacy status from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.

“So this is kind of the next hurdle to get over, basically stating that our nursing program has met our preliminary requirements and the next step would be submitting a full self-study report, and a site visit that would take place here at Albany Tech,” sys ATC Dean of Business and Healthcare Technology, Lisa Stephens.

In the state of Georgia, openings for nurses across the state were already a hot commodity, but with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Spring, having a program like this that would put more nurses into the workforce is certainly needed.

Stephens tells us, “I’m sure that everyone’s kind of aware that health care workers are in great need right now, and they were prior to the pandemic. Not just here in Georgia, but all over the nation, there’s a shortage of nurses.”

In addition to helping fill any gaps in in the nursing workforce, the candidacy could also help those who have been displaced due to the pandemic.

“With that being said, successfully graduating from an accredited program is that more attractive, it meets some of the requirements for licenses not just in the state of Georgia,” says Stephens.
