(ALBANY, GA) – Just off of South Maple Street in East Albany, there’s an illegal dumpsite that spreads nearly 100 yards.

Ward 1 City Commissioner, Jon Howard says that this is one of the largest sites he’s seen in more than 20 years of serving the city.

Commissioner Howard tells us, “We’ve certainly got to do a better job of informing our citizens that this is east albany, and things like this hurt economic development. You don’t want to bring an executive to town and have him stumble across a dump like this.”

But 100 yards isn’t the only figure involved with this dump site, as of Tuesday afternoon, there’s more than:
-40 tires thrown away
-more than a dozen couches
– half a dozen mattresses
-countless pieces of debris and clothing.

All of this becomes a much larger problem with any potential vermin in the brush.

“The weather’s getting colder, and you’ll always find snakes, rodents, and wild animals in here. And the bad part is with it being in the woods, you could find a fox or a coyote with rabies. So it becomes not just a health issue, but a safety issue…,” says Commissioner Howard.

While crews will continue to work on this site throughout the week, more than ever, Commissioner Howard is asking people to speak up.

He says, “I’ll continue to say it, if you see something, say something. And to the people of east albany, we have to speak up, and be a part of the community and report things of this nature. We can complain, but we need to put this in the right hands.”
