(ALBANY, GA) — As people get set to change their clocks an hour ahead over the weekend, the Albany Fire Department is putting out a reminder.

Deputy Fire Chief, Sebon Burns is suggesting that over this weekend, people inspect and change the batteries in their smoke detectors.

In addition to changing the batteries, Burns also says that the Albany Fire Department will be handing out and installing free smoke detectors.

He says that it’s important to keep an eye on your smoke alarms every time we spring forward or fall back.

Deputy Chief Burns says, “A lot of people don’t realize that all smoke alarms have an expiration date. 10 years, after the manufacture date, that’s on the back of the smoke alarm, you need to replace it. Because it’s subject to malfunction after 10 years.”
