(ADEL, GA) – Saturday night, streets in adel will be lined with groups giving candy to kids in cars, as the city will host their first annual “Streets of Sweets.”

Adel Main Street Manager, Brandie Dame says this year was about giving the kids a sense of familiarity.

Dame tells us, “We wanted to do something for the children, to try and bring something normal to them as possible. But we want to be very very safe. So this is going to be a drive-thru event. The families will drive through like a parade.”

After concerns from the community came in at the start of October about trick or treating being incredibly limited due to concerns about COVID-19, something had to be done.

Community leaders, including city and county officials, as well as law enforcement decided that this was the best course of action.

“We got together, and we thought ‘what could we do for these children to have some kind of normalcy?’ and so that’s when we thought of something that we could do safely, and we thought that the drive-thru would be the most important way while still fun,” says Dame.

While it will look completely different from previous years, city officials are going to move forward with the drive-thru event for future Halloweens, and downtown development will be looking to expand it in the future.

Dame says, “It’s going to be our first annual event, but we’re gonna do this every year in our new normal. We’ll add more activities to it, but for right now, we just need to keep it as safe as possible.”

Festivities will start at 4 P.M. Saturday and run until 8 P.M at the corner of Mitchell Street and Parrish Avenue
