Albany leader suggests mask mandate

(ALBANY, GA) – With COVID-19 cases holding steady in the Good Life City, current Mayor Pro-Tem, Jon Howard is suggesting to fellow Albany officials that the city adopt a mask mandate, requiring them in all public places.

He cites the city’s hot bed status in the spring as a reason for this need.

“Albany was known as a hot spot nationwide, and we did peak at a certain level. But I’m concerned now because of schools starting this month, university starting this month, and there will be a lot of individuals out in public,” says Howard.

Several major stores across the united states have already required the use of a mask upon entry, as well as plenty of Albany’s local businesses and restaurants.

Commissioner Howard says that when it comes to masking up, proper information is key.

He tells us, “Trying to enforce it would be a nightmare, but I think that if we get it out there with a target date of when it will go into affect, I’m hoping that citizens of concern will follow suit.”

While there is no state mandate on mask use at this time, Commissioner Howard is optimistic that Governor, Brian Kemp will change his mind.

“What I’m hoping is that when he decides to come down to do another emergency declaration some time next month, that he will do it in good faith and say the numbers are spiking in Atlanta, and that trend is continuing South into rural areas,” says Commissioner Howard.

As nothing is definitive at this time, the city and Dougherty County officials are still encouraging everyone to mask up.
