Cordele city commission hears arguments for and against removal of a Confederate monument

CORDELE, Ga. – Two groups of people presented arguments to the Cordele City Commission Tuesday night for and against dismantling a Confederate monument at the Community Clubhouse in Cordele, which is on private property.

Cordele city officials told representatives of the groups that they don’t exercise control of either the monument or the property that it sits on as both are privately held.

A man representing the group that wants the statue taken down presented the commission with a 8,000-signature petition from Change.org asking for the removal.

An attorney representing another group asked to leave the statue in place and also erect a statue representing Black history. The new statue would be at no cost to the city.
