Department of Highway Safety talks 4th of July weekend
(ALBANY, GA) – As re-opening efforts continue, plenty of people are no doubt getting plans set to hit the road to their favorite lake or beach.
But as Department of Highway Safety Communications Manager, Rob Hydrick says, people need to be cautious if they plan on heading somewhere that weekend.
Rob tells us, “With less vehicles we saw on the road, we did see those who were on the roads traveling at excessive rates of speed. And they were putting themselves and others in danger.”
With stay at home orders lifted across Georgia, many have likely been wanting to get out and away from their homes for the holiday weekend, they’re expecting travel within the state to be high.
“With this holiday falling on a weekend, this is going to be an opportunity for people to look to find a place where they can go to, like a beach or a lake…,” says Hydrick.
Regardless of whether there will be significantly more or less traffic over the holiday weekend, highway patrols will still be out to keep those who are celebrating safe on the roads, and the department of highway safety wants drivers this independence day weekend to keep a couple things in mind.
Hydrick says, “Number one, paying attention to the road, obeying the speed limit, and never getting behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol or drugs. A lot of those things can save lives.”
Hydrick says that it’s still too early to estimate the number of cars on the road will be for the holiday weekend.
