City Commissioner stepping up to “spring clean” in their Ward
ALBANY, GA – Albany City Commissioner Jon Howard is getting a jump on “spring cleaning” by dragging a broom and more for Operation Clean Sweep. Targeting his Ward One of the Good Life City.
Howard is joining forces with staff from multiple departments with the City of Albany along with contractors as they set out at 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon and the next three Thursday’s to clean the streets in his ward and to send a message to the residents.
“…and what we hope that will happen this coming Thursday; while they’re in here cleaning up that it will resonate with the residents and the citizens and the business owners and the community is to try to help us keep the city clean.” said City Commissioner Jon Howard of Ward 1.
Howard is targeting trash such as paper, beer bottles, fast-food bags, and debris that is seen in residential areas and throughout his ward. And to eliminate the problem, Howard speaks of a “community watch.” Not for crime but the trash and debris.
“I always encourage citizens of my ward and throughout the city, ‘if you see something, say something.’ And if they decide that they would keep in front of their yard, or their carport or the drive clean, we can make a substantial dent in trying to eliminate littering and other problems in the neighborhood.” said Howard.
Howard adds that seeing trash all around ward one is disheartening, not only for the environment but the community as well.
“I get disgusted. And the reason why I get disgusted is because if you stay in a neighborhood that you should program yourself, don’t throw beer bottles, cigarette lighters, cigarette paper down. Just have a plastic bag in your car and take it to the trash can when you get home.” said Howard.
Commissioner Howard hopes this initiative will encourage not only other city peers, but county commissioners as well.
“We represent the same constituents, whether they’re on the east side, west side, north side, or south side. And if we as commission can set an example, we certainly hope this example resonates to our constituents and business owners.” said Howard.
Crews will focus on cleaning up debris, litter, trimming brush, and more according to the City of Albany.
Last week, commissioner Howard and company cleaned Mobile Avenue to Radium Springs and then Moultrie Road to Mitchell Avenue.
