(SOUTHWEST GEORGIA) – With plenty of businesses closed down or operating under different circumstances, communities across Southwest Georgia are enacting curfews to cut down on traffic during the Coronavirus pandemic.
“Because it’s an enemy that you can’t see, we want to make sure that we limit any opportunity for this virus, or at the very least to reduce an opportunity for the virus to spread to other people,” says Camilla Mayor, Kelvin Owens.
Throughout the week, communities like Moultrie and Leesburg have already enacted curfews, but a few more have enacted one as well.
In Camilla, the city’s curfew is set from ten at night through six the next morning.
Mayor Owens tells us over the phone, “It’s extremely important to have the curfew in place right now as it relates to COVID-19 and dealing with this virus.”
Over in Sylvester, Worth County Sheriff, Don Whitaker wants the curfew in effect for worth county to help deter crime as well.
Sheriff Whitaker says “What we’re trying to do first off the spread of this virus, if we can possibly do that. Also, to keep anyone who may have ill intent on their mind from taking advantage of the situation and doing something illegal.”
But law enforcement more than anything is asking for the public’s co-operation in these curfews for the time being.
“Even during the daytime hours, if you can limit your travel, limit your exposure, i think we’re all the better off for it,” says Sheriff Whitaker.
