MCLB Albany celebrates 249th birthday of U.S. Marine Corps with cake-cutting ceremony and uniform pageant

ALBANY, Ga. – While we honor our veterans this coming Monday, Friday marked a very special day for one branch of our armed services.

Despite the gloomy conditions Friday morning, spirits were high on the Marine Corps Logistics Base…

As they celebrated 249 years of the Marines.

“We’re very proud of our history since November 10th, 1775, until modern day. Every year we gather to celebrate and commemorate our birthday. And, this pageant just helps Marines connect to history and those who have gone before them and served in the Marine Corps,” said Colonel Matthew McKinney, Commander, MCLB Albany.

As part of celebrating nearly a quarter century, the Marines presented their history through a uniform pageant that dates back from the American Revolution all the way through to the present day.

Something one Corporal we spoke to was honored to be a part of.

“So, I represented the Marine Corps during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953… It’s definitely an eye opener getting to see, you know, what Marines had to wear during that time,” said Corporal Kori Robinson, MCLB Albany.

Many in the Albany community are retired Marines themselves…

And… to have them there Friday as part of the national celebration shows solidarity long after they’ve retired from service.

“For every marine across the globe celebrating the birthday, whether you have two Marines or 2000 Marines, it’s a special day. And, all Marines remember that day, no matter how long they live,” said Col. McKinney.

But… 2025 marks a major milestone as the Marine Corps will cut the cake to celebrate 250 years.

We ask Colonel McKinney about any preliminary plans for the quarter century birthday.

“250 is going to be amazing. We’re assembling our planning committee now and probably in January, we’ll go in full earnest into the planning and preparation for next year’s celebration,” said Col. McKinney.

The Marine Corps Logistics Base also invited several local JROTC’s from across the area to be a part in the 249th birthday ceremony.
