Timothy “Tim” Watkins becomes first African-American Sheriff-elect of Thomas Co.

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – We also were at the Republican headquarters in Thomasville, where Timothy “Tim” Watkins would make history with his victory as sheriff. CBS 44 reporter Gabe Hutton has a recap.

History was made last night in Thomas County as Tim Watkins became the first African-American sheriff to hold that position in office.

Now when I talked with the voters of Thomas County, they said they weren’t surprised. Tim Watkins has been with the community for a long time as he was in the sheriff’s office ever since 1993, working his way up to the commander position. Also, his military background is something a lot of people loved as he had 31 years in the Army National Guard and as well as getting a huge endorsement.

Tim Watkins credited this endorsement to his success of getting elected, and it was by Carlton Powell. Carlton Powell was the former sheriff for Thomas County for over 48 years. And, he said that was a big reason why he would get elected. I spoke with Tim Watkins on why it means so much for him to become sheriff.

“Well, I’m officially the sheriff-elect, and it feels great that the citizens of Thomas County has spoken and they have elected me as the next sheriff from Thomas County. I replaced my long serving boss, Colin Powell, who served for 48 years and who’s currently the longest serving sheriff in the United States,” said Timothy “Tim” Watkins, sheriff-elect.

The big talking point is the first African-American in office, first the sheriff position held.

What does that specifically mean to you?

“Well, to me, it means that we’ve come a long way in South Georgia. The sense of this county actually concerned me as a worthy person to be the sheriff of the county. And, I’m looking forward to serving them,” said Watkins.

And, again, something from the people in the voters of Thomas County. They wanted to let it be known. This was earned by Tim Watkins.

I’m hoping to get an interview with Congressman Austin Scott in Tifton.
