Albany armed robbery suspect in custody in Early Co.
ALBANY, Ga. – Late last week, a local woman was robbed at gunpoint here on South Slappey Boulevard. We spoke with the Albany Police Department (APD) Monday morning about the search for the suspect.
Chief Michael Persley says the suspect has been identified as Roger Haynes following a Wednesday night robbery.
And… after a weekend-long search, he’s been captured and in custody.
“As of this morning, Mr. Haynes is currently in the Early County Jail, awaiting to be brought back to dougherty county. From what I’m told, a citizen down an Early county spotted Mr. Hayes and contacted local authorities who were able to pick him up. So, thank you…” said Chief Michael Persley, Albany Police Department (APD).
Haynes is charged with several crimes including armed robbery and kidnapping to name a couple.
Persley had this to say about the nature of the crime.
“This situation here was a rare situation to happen here in Albany. And, I can’t think of any other cases recently that even resemble close to this,” said Chief Persley.
Police reports say Haynes approached the victims’ car and shot through the windshield…
Haynes followed up by having the victim drive to several ATMs to withdraw money from them.
The victim was the only person in the car at the time, leading to this response from the Police Chief.
“It doesn’t matter who you are or where you are traveling to work, make sure someone is there with you. You know, some people have a schedule. You know, if I get in the car, I’ve contacted somebody, and when I get to the next stop, I’ll contact you with a voice, a text message, and just always be aware of your surroundings,” said Persley.
And… Chief Persley says that, in spite of the nature of this crime, that people should make sure they don’t waste any time getting their car moving if they’re alone.
We found out that the victim in this incident was taken to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital for treatment and was released the same evening.
